Metapattern > interdisciplinary foundations > boundary conditions
[T]he whole set is called the nil object. This name might seem paradoxical at first, but we’ll see that starting from zero helps formalize a principally open-ended progression into ever-more-detailed information objects. As a corollary, Metapattern does not set any limit to establishing parts of a whole. No information object may claim atomic status.
in: The pattern of metapattern: ontological formalization of context and time for open interconnection
A distinction between behavior as dynamic and attribute as static is unnecessary. An attribute can also be considered behavior, with static merely a boundary case of dynamic. Such abstraction helps to optimize compactness of formalism.

Each overall object has one node with a special status. A mechanism is needed to bridge the separate identities of what is and should remain an overall object. All other object nodes point to the nil node, expressing the object’s nil identity. A standardized identity relationship connects a “normal” node to the nil node; to keep Metapattern as structured as possible even the nil nodes do not go without a context. Each nil node maintains a nil relationship with the nil object.

Assumptions help to put a stop to shifting. They […] perform a boundary function. […] And don't be shocked when they escape empirical proof. In 'fact,' as boundary concepts they should. Assumptions force closure in one direction of inquiry, thereby opening it up for other directions.
[Y]ou would dismiss them straight away 'as' valid contragrams. I'd quite agree with you. But then, precisely their tautological nature could yield a yardstick of sorts. Or a boundary case.

I believe both the subjective and the situational constitute analytical boundaries (or: assumptions, foundation, etc.), hence subjective situationism.

Change, however, always implies the possibility of continuity—defined as the absence of change during a particular period of time. Continuity is change with zero value (which is nonetheless a value).

In the direction of increasing behavioral differentiation, that is, downwards according to Metapattern’s visual notation, there’s no real danger of infinite regression. The modeler simply stops when s/he no longer distinguishes relevant behavioral variety. Upwards, Metapattern posits a boundary node. As it is called horizon, it is drawn as thick line. A model starts from its horizon. In the reverse direction, all of a model’s nodes somehow take their ultimate perspective from it. For the first nodes originating as situated objects from the horizon, the horizon is necessarily both situation and object.
in: Open conceptual modeling with Metapattern
In recognition of our limits at … recognition, what only stands out is limited to a horizon as our … limit. In a model drawn up with Metapattern, this horizon is represented by a thick, horizontal line at the top.
in: Perspectivism in federated practice
Rather than letting the prospect of infinite regression be an absolute show-stopper, Metapattern employs the strategy whereby recursion bounded by initial/final values makes — the recognition of — regression productive. It is common to mathematics, systems thinking, et cetera.
in: Metapattern for complementarity modeling
Knowing there are different objects with their behaviors involved, when no difference can be established I would call them indistinguishable, rather than identical. I propose to limit identity to a boundary concept[.]
